Yes. A HELP/HECS balance does not automatically prevent a home loan, but a lender may include the associated repayment obligation when assessing how much income is available for a mortgage. This matters for medical graduates whose salaries are increasing but whose study debt is still being repaid.

Know the balance and current repayment rules

Check your current study-loan balance and payslip deductions rather than relying on an old estimate. The ATO’s study and training loan guidance explains the repayment system and thresholds. Rules can change between financial years, so use the current ATO information when you apply. Your lender may assess the debt using its own credit policy; ask how it treats your specific circumstances.

Put HELP in the full budget

List your income sources and other commitments alongside the study debt. For an intern or registrar, shifts, overtime and allowances may vary; for a specialist, a higher income may also mean a different compulsory repayment amount. A lender’s calculated borrowing capacity is not a recommendation to borrow the maximum. APRA’s lending guidance explains why sustainable repayments and other debts are central to the assessment.

Should you repay HELP early to borrow more?

There is no universal answer. Voluntary repayment could reduce cash available for a deposit or emergency buffer, and the benefit depends on your balance, tax position, lender assessment and other loan costs. Do not act on a calculator’s result alone. Ask your mortgage broker to compare the borrowing assessment with and without a proposed voluntary payment, and seek independent tax advice if you are considering a material payment.

Bring the right evidence

Prepare current payslips, ATO study-loan information, employment contracts, deposit records and statements for other liabilities. If you expect a material change in role or income, explain it with signed documents rather than a verbal projection. Be transparent about all debts; a lender will normally verify what you declare.

For profession-specific comparisons, see home loans for doctors or home loans for nurses.General information only, not tax advice. ATO and lender rules should be checked at the time of application.

Put HELP in context with your whole application

A broker can compare how lenders assess income, existing commitments and the repayment budget.
